The Wiltse family immigrated from Canada to northeast Iowa in the mid-1850s. While he was away from home caring for the medical needs of hordes of immigrants arriving weekly to the area, his wife Phebe Wiltse faced the hostile environment on the prairie with their brood of children alone.
