    The Minneapolis Truckers’ Strike of 1934 was a fight for workers right to form a union. It was a watershed moment for the labor movement as well as for societal transformation and the settlement made Minneapolis a Union Town. On the strike’s 90th anniversary the exhibit explores the relationship of history to the present as well as workers’ role in social change.

    Come canoeing at Fort Snelling State Park with DNR Naturalist Kao Thao. Equipment provided. DO NOT go to the Historic Fort Snelling (Bloomington Road). Keep in mind that it will take at least 10-15 minutes to drive from the park’s entrance building (Contact Station) to the Visitor Center. With music by eight-time Academy Award winner, Alan Menken, lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater and a compelling book by Doug Wright, this fishy fable will capture your heart with its irresistible songs, including "Under the Sea," "Kiss the Girl" and "Part of Your World." Ariel, King Triton's youngest daughter, wishes to pursue the human Prince Eric in the world above, bargaining with the evil sea witch, Ursula, to trade her tail for legs. But the bargain is not what it seems, and Ariel needs the help of her colorful friends, Flounder the fish, Scuttle the seagull and Sebastian the crab to restore order under the sea.
  • Eureka Recycling Plant (Roosevelt 55+)

    Get an exciting and up-close look at the inner workings of a zero waste recycling facility. Eureka, one the few non-profit mission-based recyclers in the country, shows you how recyclable materials are collected, separated, and then sold. This is a 90-minute tour and you must be able to walk up and down multiple flights of stairs and catwalks. Closed-toe shoes are required. Space is limited to ten people a tour. This tour in an a working recycling plant with loud noises and many moving machines and may not be appropriate for those who can easily become overstimulated.   • Exploring the Book Arts (Roosevelt 55+)

    Artists’ books are works of art that utilize the form of a book or are inspired by the idea of a book. Learn what an artists’ book is, some techniques and materials artists use, a brief history of the art form, and how to find them in the library catalog. Participants will start in Special Collections, exploring selections from the Book Arts and Fine Press Collection. This will be followed by a tour of the Cargill Gallery exhibit “The Next Chapter: Work by Minnesota Book Artists Award Recipients,” with curator and paper artist Erica Spitzer Rasmussen.
  • Guthrie Theater: "Little Shop of Horrors" (Southwest)

On Skid Row, Mr. Mushnik plans to shutter his failing florist shop when his timid staffer Seymour presents an exotic-but-wilted flytrap named Audrey II. Convinced it will boost business, Seymour encourages Mr. Mushnik to display the peculiar plant, which Seymour successfully revives. As Audrey II draws much-needed crowds to the shop, Seymour makes a disturbing discovery: It needs fresh blood (and lots of it) to grow — a secret that forces Seymour into a Faustian bargain to keep his fame and fortune intact. A hilarious mashup of science fiction, horror and musical theater, this cult-classic boasts Motown-inspired hits like “Feed Me (Git It),” “Suddenly, Seymour” and “Little Shop of Horrors."   • Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant

    The Metropolitan Wastewater Treatment Plant, one of the largest in the nation, treats over 70% of the waste water produced in the twin cities area. Learn how waste water from faucets, bathrooms and kitchen sinks are treated to make them safe to return to the Mississippi River. This tour includes an outdoor walking portion. Please dress for the weather. We also require everyone wear sturdy shoes or boots that completely cover their feet and clothing that completely covers their legs, for safety and comfort. No personal items can be brought on tour and no photographs or video can be taken. We recommend that everyone take the time to watch a 14-minute video about Metropolitan Council Environmental Services and the Twin Cities regional wastewater treatment system before their visit.   • Mississippi River Private Cruise on the Magnolia Blossom w/ Historian Dave Bredemus (Southwest)

    Cruise the Mighty Mississippi River from St. Paul toward Minneapolis and back past downtown St. Paul to Inver Grove Heights aboard the 80-foot Magnolia Blossom paddleboat. Both inside and outside seating is available. Spend the evening relaxing and listening to stories about the local Mississippi River’s history, geology and natural wonders. Travel up the Mississippi past Fort Snelling, Mendota,Hidden Falls and Minnehaha Park. Travel down river to see and hear tails of Pike Island, Crosby Nature Center and historic bridges. Travel past downtown Saint Paul to Dakota County and Inver Grove Heights. The trip will be narrated by boat captain Dan and historian Dave Bredemus and will feature river history, shoreline points of interest, natural history and wildlife identification. Beverages will be available to purchase on board the boat.     Spring is one of the trickiest times to identify trees. Learn to identify trees before the leaves fully emerge using clues such as buds, flowers, bark, and phenology, then go on a walk with a naturalist and practice your identification skills. This class includes outdoor walking. Please dress appropriately.

    Tour the state-of-the-art Star Tribune Printing plant in downtown Minneapolis. This is a state-of-the-art printing facility in downtown Minneapolis. You will learn the fascinating story of modern newspaper printing, including robots and giant rolls of paper. Note: Closed toe shoes are required. This tour is ADA accessible but advance notice is appreciated so we can best accommodate you.

    Saint Paul is a city of neighborhoods(17). Two special walking tours have been organized of these special historic districts in the West 7th/Fort Road Neighborhood. Each tour will give you an intimate look at the oldest neighborhood in Saint Paul. West 7th is an urban success story which has reinvented itself but has been able to keep its historic look and cultural identity. Learn about the organizing efforts led by community people and businesses to save and improve this historic neighborhood. Our tour guide for both tours will be historian Dave Bredemus, who has lived or worked in the neighborhood his whole life and has been involved with many of the projects to improve the neighborhood over the last 50 years. Little Bohemia and Uppertown Walking Tour Tour this area of West 7th Street which was founded in the late 1830’s and largely settled in the 1850’s and 1860’s. See some of the oldest and most historic homes, businesses, and parks in Minnesota, walking through this neighborhood in the West Seventh area of Saint Paul. Visit a unique historic district of old stone houses that pre-date the Civil War. This area of Saint Paul is the oldest living neighborhood in the Twin Cities. Visit ethnic churches like St Stanislaus and the ethnic hall CSPS Hall. Hear stories of early immigrants of Czech background who settled in this area. See homes of early Minnesota governors and mayors of St. Paul.
