  • Bus Tour: Mason City & Surf Ballroom w/ Dave Bredemus (Southwest)

    Travel down interstate 35 south a little over 2 hours. We’ll cross the border into Iowa and spend a fascinating day touring a different “Twin Cities”: Mason City and Clear Lake Iowa. In Mason City we will partake in a walking tour of the Rock Glen neighborhood which is full of prairie-style architecture. Mason City has some Frank Lloyd Wright structures. We will tour two of them: the Stockman House and the Park Inn Hotel -- the last remaining Frank Lloyd Wright hotel. We will tour the Meredith Wilson home and neighborhood, as well as, the nearby YWCA that is being restored at an arts venue and artist residence. Enjoy time on your own for lunch and to explore downtown Mason City. In Clear Lake we will visit rock ‘n’ roll icon the Surf Ballroom. This ballroom has been an important historic landmark since the 1930s. Created to resemble an ocean beach club, murals were hand-painted to depict pounding surf, swaying palm, trees, sail boats, and lighthouses. Buddy Holly played his last concert here before his fatal plane crash in 1959, forever known as the day the music died. Learn the story of major recording stars that have visited the Surf Ballroom, or played a concert here at some point during their career.   • West 7th Walking Tour: Brewery Neighborhood with Historian Dave Bredemus (Southwest)

    Saint Paul is a city of neighborhoods(17). Two special walking tours have been organized of these special historic districts in the West 7th/Fort Road Neighborhood. Each tour will give you an intimate look at the oldest neighborhood in Saint Paul. West 7th is an urban success story which has reinvented itself but has been able to keep its historic look and cultural identity. Learn about the organizing efforts led by community people and businesses to save and improve this historic neighborhood. Our tour guide for both tours will be historian Dave Bredemus, who has lived or worked in the neighborhood his whole life and has been involved with many of the projects to improve the neighborhood over the last 50 years. Brewery Neighborhood Walking Tour This special neighborhood is the home of many German landmarks and breweries. Hear the story of the renaissance of the Schmidt Brewery. Learn how Germans and other ethnic groups, left their legacy in this neighborhood along the Mississippi River. Discover how the interesting cave system, and Cascade Creek, created business opportunities. Visit old farmsteads, horsebarns, beer gardens, saloons, railroad, architectural wonders, historic churches and mansions in this district. This area also has Minnesota’s oldest barber shop and bar plus a very old bowling alley which we plan on visiting.   • Mississippi River Private Cruise on the Magnolia Blossom w/ Historian Dave Bredemus (Southwest)

    Cruise the Mighty Mississippi River from St. Paul toward Minneapolis and back past downtown St. Paul to Inver Grove Heights aboard the 80-foot Magnolia Blossom paddleboat. Both inside and outside seating is available. Spend the evening relaxing and listening to stories about the local Mississippi River’s history, geology and natural wonders. Travel up the Mississippi past Fort Snelling, Mendota,Hidden Falls and Minnehaha Park. Travel down river to see and hear tails of Pike Island, Crosby Nature Center and historic bridges. Travel past downtown Saint Paul to Dakota County and Inver Grove Heights. The trip will be narrated by boat captain Dan and historian Dave Bredemus and will feature river history, shoreline points of interest, natural history and wildlife identification. Beverages will be available to purchase on board the boat. See some of the oldest and most historic homes, businesses, and parks in Minnesota, walking through this neighborhood in the West Seventh area of Saint Paul. Visit a unique historic district of old stone houses that pre-date the Civil War. This area of Saint Paul is the oldest living neighborhood in the Twin Cities. Visit ethnic churches like St Stanislaus and the ethnic hall CSPS Hall. Hear stories of early immigrants of Czech background who settled in this area.   • Bus Tour: Cranberry Festival in Warrens, WI (Southwest)

    Enjoy the roads of central Wisconsin, full of scarlet maples, yellow birch, and deep red sumac as we travel to Warrens, Wisconsin. Warrens Cranberry Festival is the world's largest cranberry festival. There is something for everyone - 2024 will mark the festival’s 52nd year! The festival boasts over 850 arts and crafts booths, 350 flea market booths, and 100 farm market vendors. The festival also has over 100 food vendors. We will tour the cranberry museum and have a delicious cranberry ice cream cone at the museum. A tour of a cranberry bog is also included. If interested, you’ll have a chance to watch the grande parade, with Wisconsin’s largest collection of high school bands. Our motorcoach bus will have plenty of space underneath to store any purchases. NOTE: Lunch is on your own at the festival as well as a fast food stop on the way home.
