Garment Construction: Intro to Sewing (Ella Baker)

Adult Enrichment Fall 2025

Learn to use a sewing machine to complete an easy garment. In the first session, we will cover sewing machine basics and how to measure correctly. Everyone will leave with a full set of measurements. In the second session, students will bring the pattern and materials needed to complete the project, and we will learn how to read the pattern and layout the pattern pieces to cut. The third session will be construction and troubleshooting.

Fabric and notions to complete the pattern

One or two fabrics, thread, elastic

Basic sewing tools

Fabric scissors

Pins

Seam ripper

Pencil

Session 1:

Sewing machine basics

Threading your machine

Filling and inserting the bobbin

Types of feet

Stitch length/tension/selection

How to Measure

We will leave with a full list of measurements for each student

Session 2:

Pattern basics

How to read the packet and the instructions

Cutting the pattern pieces from the paper

Pinning and cutting the pattern pieces from the fabric

Session 3:

Assembling and fitting your garment
