  • Alexander Technique (Washburn at Justice Page)

The Alexander Technique (AT) is an educational framework that combines principles and practical skills for both preventing and solving problems such as chronic pain, stressful tension patterns, anxiety, and feeling stuck in efforts to find relief. The theory of change is that solving such problems is often indirect, focused on cultivating trust and supportive connections between the parts that are experiencing problems and the whole mind-body-self, particularly the central postural support system. In addition to physical and mental pain relief, common effects of this approach include more easeful breathing, coordination and balance.

Throughout the 12-week program, students will learn the fundamentals of Capoeira, starting with the ginga, which is the foundational movement that gives Capoeira its fluid, rhythmic quality. Students will also be introduced to basic kicks and defenses, developing their agility, coordination, and balance while learning essential movements for both attack and defense. In addition to the physical aspect, students will explore the history of Capoeira and the lineage of the Afro-Brasilian Capoeira Association, gaining insight into its cultural significance and the resilience of Afro-Brazilian traditions. They will also learn about the rules and etiquette of Capoeira, which emphasize respect and community. Musicality is a crucial component of Capoeira, so students will engage with traditional Capoeira music, learning how to play instruments such as the berimbau and pandeiro, as well as how to sing and clap to accompany the movements. This fosters rhythm, teamwork, and a deeper connection to the art form. Beyond the technical skills, students will build strength, flexibility, and stamina in a fun and invigorating way, working within a supportive community atmosphere. The program will culminate in a Capoeira Demonstration where students can showcase what they have learned, combining movement, music, and energy in an exciting display of their progress. • Improvisation and Contemporary Dance -formerly Storytelling in Modern Dance (South)

*UPDATE 8.25.25 The title, schedule and location of this class has changed since the brochure was printed. This class meets at South High School on Thursdays from 7:35-8:55pm, Oct. 9 - Dec 11 (no class Oct 16 or Nov. 27). In Improvisation and Contemporary, we will explore two distinct dance styles. While these styles are complex and expansive in their own right, I’ve found that putting the two directly in conversation is a beautiful exploration. Each of these movement forms have had a strong influence on the ways in which I interpret the other. So what are these styles all about? Dance Improv offers us tools to express ourselves through movement in a spontaneous and organic way. Through individual and interactive “dance games” and guided exercises, participants will learn to cultivate free form movement and set aside preconceived ideas about what dance should or shouldn’t be. Contemporary Dance foundations explored in this class will include body alignment, weight transfer, expansion/contraction, floorwork, and storytelling, among others! Over the duration of the class, participants will practice contemporary techniques and learn short movement phrases taught by the instructor. They will also collaboratively develop a short phrase of their own, building upon improv exercises and support from the instructor. This class welcomes dancers of any and all skill levels and dance experience. Join me in sharing stories, space, and movement! If class is full, please enroll in the waitlist. We will contact you if a space becomes available.
