    Do you love the night sky? Join our beginner-friendly astronomy class and embark on a journey through the stars and constellations! Using unique astronomy teaching models and diverse sky legends, we will demystify the wonders of the universe. Black holes, moon phases and the changing seasons. You will also discover free astro apps, local star parties and receive valuable advice on choosing a family telescope. Whether you are a novice stargazer or simply curious about the cosmos, this class is the perfect way to explore the night sky. Join us and let the stars ignite your passion for astronomy! Please note that this in-person class isn't meant for young puppies or reactive/easily distracted dogs.   • Dog Obedience 1: Life Skills for Dogs 6 Months + (Southwest)

    Teach your dog useful behaviors for living in your home while learning to use proven dog- and family-friendly positive reinforcement-based methods. Teach your dog sit, down, loose leash walk, come, sit for greeting, drop it, and leave it. Instructor will need to see your dog’s current vaccination records, including Rabies, Bordetella and DHLP vaccination certificates on the first night of class. The entire family is welcome, children must be accompanied by an adult. One dog per adult. If class is full, please enroll for the waitlist. We will contact you if a space becomes available.

  • Metal Detecting 1 (Summer)

    An introductory class on how to use a metal detector - Learn how they operate, their uses, and what types of things you can find. Cover municipal regulations, best practices and courtesies, and how exactly to interpret what each beep means. From relic hunting to coin collecting, trying to find lost keys to finding the edge of a property line, Metal Detecting is a fantastic hobby with a wide range of uses. Participants will receive an overview of the above, followed by time to put it to practice and go on a hunt of their own! Each student will get an individual metal detector and free reign to explore and hunt. A staff will be present to assist and answer any questions during this period. Metal Detectors are quite light, weighing less than 3 pounds. Frequent standing/sitting/kneeling is expected for this activity. If the class is full, please sign up on the waitlist.     Minneapolis Community Chess Tournament (Summer)

    We are hosting a friendly, semi-competitive community chess tournament at Seward Montessori this Summer! 5 rounds of 30 + 5 time control. We will be using a Swiss scoring system, with +1 point awarded per win, +.5 Points awarded for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Chess boards will be provided, chess clock apps are recommended for keeping time - if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to andrew.kallevig@mpls.k12.mn.us. Some chess clocks are available for use. Trophies will be awarded to top 3 players, which will be determined by total score and tiebreakers based on strength of opponent. In addition, first place will receive a new chess set! This is an unrated tournament of all skill levels- come experience an OTB tournament with your community! Tournament specific rules will be: Touch Move (if you touch a piece, it must be moved.) Illegal moves will be reset, with 2 minutes awarded to the opposing party. Quiet Play (No continuous conversation or excessive comments) Any assistance, please pause clock and raise your hand, tournament staff will assist any disputes/clarify any rules.

    Minneapolis Community Magic: the Gathering Festival (Summer)

    *** Cut off for Main event day-of registration is 8/1 at 5:00PM. Any Registrations made with the Main event fee will be refunded on 8/3. *** A day full of all things MTG! Minneapolis Community Magic Festival consists of a main event and many side events - Main event is a Swiss style Sealed tournament of Edge of Eternities (released August 1st). Top 8 members will stay for a 3 round draft. First place will receive a box, Top 4 will receive additional prizes. Pack per win. In addition to the main event, we will have: - On-Demand Drafts: drafts prescheduled on the hour, in addition to firing when 8 people are ready to go! Pay inside the event, price of draft will be market price. - Commander area: Firing games of 4 players as they come. There will be two types of commander games - casual, and competitive. $5 entry to either, with casual receiving a pack regardless of placing. Competitive will receive 3 packs for 1st, 1 pack for 2nd. - Cube area: Cube enthusiasts can come and try each other's brews. Cube firing times will be on demand - We are working on partnering with vendors to provide product for anyone interested - We are working on setting up a food truck. We will send out an email to all registered before August 2nd if food is unavailable on site. Refreshments/drinks will be available for purchase, in addition to water fountains throughout the school. SCHEDULE: 9:30AM - approx. 9:00PM. Doors at 9:30AM, Tournament check in from 9:30-10:15. 10:15 go over rules.   • Repair or Replace Rotted Speaker Foam (Camden)

    Speaker suspension foam was one of the greatest advances in high fidelity speaker systems, but as many people discovered, it had a short life span. Every day, perfectly good stereo speakers get thrown away when the installation of replacement foam would typically be a quick and user-friendly repair. We will discuss how to identify, repair or replace rotted speaker foam, and where and when to go for help.

    From the latest releases to collectables, vinyl is hot again. Learn how to repair that old stereo set in your closet or find out what to look for in those garage sale finds (and what to avoid) by learning the turntable jargon, basic setup, installation, upkeep and getting hands-on experience balancing a tonearm. Watch a vintage turntable get back into action and find out if that old stereo you or your parents had back in college is okay to use with just a new needle or if it needs an overhaul. Jim has been collecting and dealing vinyl and repairing turntables for twenty years so you can leave with the knowledge you need to get back into vinyl with confidence. .

    Woodworking: Open Shop (Southwest)

    In a fully-equipped wood shop, work on projects of your choice or consider ideas suggested by the instructor. No on-site project storage available. Please note that there is very limited space in the wood shop and we cannot accommodate storage for your projects- you must transport your materials each class. Also note that students are NOT permitted to use the Timesaver machine, it must be operated by the instructor AT ALL TIMES! If class is full, please enroll for the waitlist.
