  • "RENT - The Musical": Cast Auditions for Minneapolis Community Education Summer Musical

Thank you for your interest in auditioning for the cast of Minneapolis Community Education's production of RENT - The Musical! Audition spots are limited. Please do not sign up for multiple slots. If all auditions slots are full, please register for the virtual auditions. We will be seeing a limited number of walk-ins as time allows on scheduled dates and will send out a reminder of that to anyone in the virtual audition list. If you have questions, email lifelong.learning@mpls.k12.mn.us. Please prepare an unaccompanied 30 seconds of a pop, rock, or contemporary musical theatre song that showcases your range and storytelling ability. You may sing from the show if you would like. If you play guitar, we encourage you to accompany yourself. You may sing your audition a capella or to a track (we will have a bluetooth speaker at auditions but you will need to bring your own track on your phone). There will be no dance call or monologue portion of the initial audition as RENT is almost fully sung through and our staging will be movement heavy but not particularly dance heavy. We anticipate casting 8 principal roles, 8 featured ensemble, and up to 25 additional ensemble members. Adults of all ages and youth entering 11th grade or older are welcome to audition. Please note it is our goal to cast a diverse cast of all ages and abilities. Register for your preferred audition date and 1-hour block of time. We are accepting virtual submissions for this production. We view all auditions, in person or virtual, with the same care and consideration and have historically cast many actors from virtual auditions. To submit virtually, sign up for that "course" and our production manager will reach out to you in April. At that time, you will email a headshot (doesn’t have to be professional, just a good photo of your face), audition form, resume (optional), and video of your audition (including your slate) by 5pm on Sunday, April 12. We realize this deadline is earlier than what was originally posted, so please call 612-668-3100 out if this presents a barrier. Callbacks will be Saturday, April 18 from 10am-1:30pm at Southwest. We will have virtual callback options as well. Rehearsals begin May 18 at Southwest High School and will shift to South High School mid-June. Performances July 10-19 at South High School. On Broadway, Rent gained critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The Broadway production closed on September 7, 2008, after 12 years, making it one of the longest-running shows on Broadway. If you are a beginner at clawhammer banjo, Old Time music, or both, you are welcome to this class and we'll start from zero. We will cover some music theory to help you get started, and touch on the basics of how jams work. The playing techniques are applicable to any kind of music, but we will focus on tunes that get played at jams. Everything will be taught entirely by ear, with no written music. All you need to bring is a functioning five string banjo (check that you can get it in tune), a capo, and a tuner. If class is full, please enroll in the waitlist. You will learn simple old time tunes as well as practice licks. Julie will show you the basic chord structures, ways to practice switching chords and various resources for continued learning. Taught in a fun and accessible manner this course is designed for people with little or no banjo experience. Please bring a banjo (preferably open-back), a tuner and capo. Students can also bring a recording device or use their phone to record the lesson. Your instructor, Julie Jao, has been playing Clawhammer Banjo for over 25 years. Her passion for the instrument is contagious, and she’s eager to share the joy of playing with everyone!
  • Continuing Clawhammer Banjo (Seward)

Ready to take your clawhammer banjo playing to the next level? This 5-session class is designed for players who already have a grasp of the basics—bum-ditty rhythm, drop-thumbing, and a few simple tunes—and are ready to expand their skills and repertoire. We'll focus on developing smoother technique, increasing speed and precision, and learning tunes that introduce more advanced elements like alternate string pull-offs, hammer-ons, and melodic phrasing. Students will also explore tunings beyond open G, learn strategies for playing with others, and gain tools for continued self-guided learning. Bring your banjo (preferably with a scoop), a recording device or notebook, and be ready to play. Tablature will be provided, but playing by ear will be encouraged and supported. Whether you're aiming to jam with others, play solo, or dive deeper into old-time music, this class will help you build confidence and keep the momentum going.

Additional Info: The workshop focuses on the practical and creative aspects of recording drums, including drum tuning, drum types and materials, microphone selection and placement, processing and mixing approaches, and techniques for achieving different drum sounds. Special attention will be given to recording drums in non-ideal spaces and on a budget. Attendees are encouraged to bring in their own tracks or drum recordings to discuss workflows, troubleshoot issues, and refine approaches. The goal is to keep the experience intimate, interactive, and collaborative, with real-world examples and open discussion throughout. Attendees do not have to have any specific background or experience. We may be demonstrating things in Pro Tools, but this is meant to be software (and gear) agnostic. We are not teaching a specific software at this time. We intend for this to be as beneficial to attendees as possible. Because of this, we’ll gather some info about you once you’ve signed up. Once we have this info from all participants, we can decide what might be best to focus on as class. Attendees will have the option to bring in a track of their own music or something they might have recorded elsewhere to talk through the process and any challenges they may be having with it. Our goal is to keep this intimate, interactive, and collaborative. We want to discuss and refine things like: Drum tuning Drum types/material/sizes/muting Microphones and their placement Drum processing/mixing Getting different drum sounds Recording drums in non-ideal spaces, on a budget
