Using unique astronomy teaching models and diverse sky legends, we will demystify the wonders of the universe. Black holes, moon phases and the changing seasons. You will also discover free astro apps, local star parties and receive valuable advice on choosing a family telescope. Whether you are a novice stargazer or simply curious about the cosmos, this class is the perfect way to explore the night sky. Join us and let the stars ignite your passion for astronomy! This is an adult astronomy class. Children 7 and up are welcome to enroll with an adult. (Enrollment fee must be paid for children as well). If class is full, please enroll for the waitlist. By more clearly articulating our lower cost options, we have removed the barrier that some may have felt in making scholarship requests. When participants sign up at the higher price levels, they help make the program more sustainable.

    Chess for Beginners (Lake Harriet Upper)

    Would you like to be able to play a social game of Chess with friends and family, but you just never learned how? This is the class for you! Come learn the rules and strategies of the game with other beginners. This class will be appropriate for anyone unrated to 1500 ELO and will include 5 weeks of instruction/chess play and 2 weeks of open chess play (with the instructor present to answer questions.)

Online chess is a great way to practice, but OTB chess is the way the game is meant to be played! We will have boards and clocks, but you are more than welcome to bring your own!     Work with your dog on basic life skills using a rewards-based learning style. Skills such as sit, stay, and come, as well as how to walk nicely on a leash, not jump-up and impulse control. Your dog’s current vaccination records including Rabies, Bordetella and DHLP will need to be presented on the first night of class. Up to two people can attend with every dog registered. Important Notice for this Class: To support all community members and staff who have chemical sensitivity and fragrance allergies, please refrain from wearing scents to the Roosevelt Dog Obedience class. NOTE: We adjusted the dates of this class after the brochure was printed, so it is now four weeks instead of five weeks, and $65 instead of $79.

    Metal Detecting 1 (Northeast)

    An introductory class on how to use a metal detector - Learn how they operate, their uses, and what types of things you can find. Cover municipal regulations, best practices and courtesies, and how exactly to interpret what each beep means. From relic hunting to coin collecting, trying to find lost keys to finding the edge of a property line, Metal Detecting is a fantastic hobby with a wide range of uses. Participants will receive an overview of the above, followed by time to put it to practice and go on a hunt of their own! Each student will use an individual metal detector and free reign to explore and hunt. A staff will be present to assist and answer any questions during this period. Metal Detectors are quite light, weighing less than 3 pounds. Frequent standing/sitting/kneeling is expected for this activity. If the class is full, please sign up on the waitlist. Additional slots may become available/extra dates my be added.
  • Ready, Set, Mow! Lawnmower Maintenance (Edison)

    Matt's shop course offers an offsite adventure in lawn mower mastery through demonstration and Q&A! Learn how to tune up and safely operate your gas-powered push lawn mower, including diagnosing problems, changing the oil, replacing the spark plug, and inspecting or changing the air filter. Other maintenance habits such as blade sharpening and mower deck cleaning will be discussed. A Q&A section at the end will allow participants to ask questions. This class will not cover riding lawnmower maintenance, only push mowers. Do not bring your mower to this workshop. Matt will have a few to demonstrate on and show you!
