    Astronomy for Urban Dwellers (Summer)

    Do you love the night sky? Join our beginner-friendly astronomy class and embark on a journey through the stars and constellations! Using unique astronomy teaching models and diverse sky legends, we will demystify the wonders of the universe. Black holes, moon phases and the changing seasons. You will also discover free astro apps, local star parties and receive valuable advice on choosing a family telescope. Whether you are a novice stargazer or simply curious about the cosmos, this class is the perfect way to explore the night sky. Join us and let the stars ignite your passion for astronomy! This is an adult astronomy class. Children 7 and up are welcome to enroll with an adult. (Enrollment fee must be paid for children as well)" If class is full, please enroll for the waitlist.     Drones : Aerial Photography & Video (Summer)

    Drone Aerial Photography Video Flying Your Plan - Checklists, Composition, Flying your drone, and more. This course builds upon Part 1 and applies to those with drones or looking to get a drone and those simply learning more about drones, aerial photography, and videography. Topics covered include: Planning your flight, Aircraft (Drone) and camera settings Demo flight and opportunity to fly your drone, weather permitting Photo and video tricks and techniques, Composing your shot Post-flight activities, Best practices, and tips Handout to take home with tips and practice items
  • Metal Detecting 1 (Summer)

    An introductory class on how to use a metal detector - Learn how they operate, their uses, and what types of things you can find. Cover municipal regulations, best practices and courtesies, and how exactly to interpret what each beep means. From relic hunting to coin collecting, trying to find lost keys to finding the edge of a property line, Metal Detecting is a fantastic hobby with a wide range of uses. Participants will receive an overview of the above, followed by time to put it to practice and go on a hunt of their own! Each student will get an individual metal detector and free reign to explore and hunt. A staff will be present to assist and answer any questions during this period. Metal Detectors are quite light, weighing less than 3 pounds. Frequent standing/sitting/kneeling is expected for this activity. If the class is full, please sign up on the waitlist. Additional slots may become available/extra dates my be added.

    Minneapolis Community Chess Tournament (Summer)

    We are hosting a friendly, semi-competitive community chess tournament at Seward Montessori this Summer! 5 rounds of 30 + 5 time control. We will be using a Swiss scoring system, with +1 point awarded per win, +.5 Points awarded for a draw, and 0 points for a loss. Chess boards will be provided, chess clock apps are recommended for keeping time - if you have any questions or concerns, feel free to reach out to andrew.kallevig@mpls.k12.mn.us. Some chess clocks are available for use. Trophies will be awarded to top 3 players, which will be determined by total score and tiebreakers based on strength of opponent. In addition, first place will receive a new chess set! This is an unrated tournament of all skill levels- come experience an OTB tournament with your community! Tournament specific rules will be: Touch Move (if you touch a piece, it must be moved.) Illegal moves will be reset, with 2 minutes awarded to the opposing party. Quiet Play (No continuous conversation or excessive comments) Any assistance, please pause clock and raise your hand, tournament staff will assist any disputes/clarify any rules.
