    Inspired by an iconic slapstick comedy sketch and New Year’s Eve tradition in Europe for over 60 years, DINNER FOR ONE tells the story of a butler helping his employer celebrate her annual dinner party. Unpredictable mishaps and a little too much wine result in a hilarious evening full of physical comedy, music, and human connection. Returning for a second year, this production is a hilarious and heartfelt celebration of love, loss, found family, and live music. The play is created in collaboration with local theater stars Christina Baldwin, Sun Mee Chomet, Jim Lichtscheidl, and musician Emilia Mettenbrink.     Four major national rail lines met and ran through downtown Minneapolis at the height of the flour milling era, building the city into a true metropolis. Who were the Rail Barons of these lines? How did these rails shape our city? What are spur lines and where did they run? Visit the sites of those lines crossing the Stone Arch Bridge or running along 2nd St. and delivering passengers to two major depots on this walking tour of 1 ½ hours.     In the spring of 1861, writer/philosopher/poet/naturalist Henry David Thoreau traveled to Minnesota for the first and only time. Seven years prior, Thoreau published his landmark book “Walden,” which championed nature, the woods, and the act of staring at a body of water for internal and spiritual self-awareness. The next year, Thoreau would die from his lifelong bout with tuberculosis, at 44 years old. Other than botanical notes, Thoreau never had a chance to write about his Minnesota visit. What would he have had to say about our great lakes and big river? Thoreau fan and writer/songwriter/author Jim Walsh has long wondered as much; now in the spring of 2024, join Walsh as he leads a tour of Twin Cities landmarks visited by naturalist/writer/poet Henry David Thoreau during his trek to Minnesota in the spring of 1861.     Ramsay County Historical Society produced a video called University Avenue: One Street, a thousand dreams. This tour will explore University Avenue from its beginning near Railroad Island in St. Paul to its Minneapolis terminus in Northeast Minneapolis. University Avenue has always been eclectic, unruly, noisy and gritty. It’s fortunes have changed over the years many times , it’s main purpose has stayed the same, a vital link between Minneapolis and St. Paul. This 133 year old street has gone from dirt to paved, horsedrawn carriages to steam powered rail to the modern street car. We will visit famous churches, industrial sites, businesses, theaters and shops along the way. Many of the ethnic groups that have settled near University Avenue and on it with their businesses will also be visited. In St. Paul, we will learn about Kittsondale,Town House, Milky Way, candy bar, Iris Park, Minnesota Transfer Railway just to name a few spots. In Minneapolis, we will visit historical locations at the University of Minnesota, first computers location, CanCan Wonderland, Territorial Road, famous bakeries, Prospect Park water tower, Frank Lloyd Wright home and many locations and oddities as University Avenue travels through Northeast Minneapolis.     Enjoy the roads of central Wisconsin, full of scarlet maples, yellow birch, and deep red sumac as we travel to Warrens, Wisconsin. Warrens Cranberry Festival is the world's largest cranberry festival. There is something for everyone - 2024 will mark the festival’s 52nd year! The festival boasts over 850 arts and crafts booths, 350 flea market booths, and 100 farm market vendors. The festival also has over 100 food vendors. We will tour the cranberry museum and have a delicious cranberry ice cream cone at the museum. A tour of a cranberry bog is also included. If interested, you’ll have a chance to watch the grande parade, with Wisconsin’s largest collection of high school bands.   • Bus Tour: Stories of the Rondo Neighborhood Before the I94 Change" with Frank M. White (Southwest)

    Join historian Frank M White on this fascinating journey through the early years of St. Paul's Rondo neighborhood. From the beginning, Rondo was a haven for people of color and immigrants. Learn of the neighborhood's immigrant namesake who faced discrimination due to his wife’s mixed white and indigenous heritage. French Canadians, German, Russian, Irish, and Jewish families all followed his lead in the late 19th century and found homes there. Beginning in the 1910s and 1920s, Rondo experienced a social and cultural boom. Music and theater flourished. African American newspapers such as the Appeal, the Northwestern Bulletin, and the St. Paul Recorder represented Rondo’s interests and needs. In 1913, St. Paul established its chapter of the NAACP, making it a center for civil rights activity. One member of the chapter, Rondo resident Roy Wilkins, later led the national NAACP. Frank grew up in Rondo. He will share stories from his extensive research as well as personal stories living in the neighborhood. Meet the Motorcoach Bus at Hallie Q.     No other neighborhood in Minneapolis has impacted our city’s music and theater life, diverse demographics, higher education opportunities, and unique skyline as has the Cedar Riverside neighborhood. As we walk through the blocks centered on Cedar and Riverside Avenues, we’ll learn about the liquor patrol zone, immigrant homes, West Bank bars, the food co-op movement, Dania Hall, protests and rent strikes, mosques, markets, a settlement house and those colorful high rise buildings next to 35W. Bring your own stories to share with tour leader Maureen Trepp, lifetime Mpls. resident, historian and frequent Cedar Riverside visitor.     A singular presence in the ballet world, Dance Theatre of Harlem presents a powerful vision for ballet in the 21st century. This multiethnic company performs a forward-thinking repertoire that includes treasured classics, neoclassical works by George Balanchine and artistic director Robert Garland, as well as innovative contemporary works that use the language of ballet to celebrate founder Arthur Mitchell’s belief that ballet belongs to everyone. The mixed program at Northrop includes renowned choreographer William Forsythe’s Blake Works IV (The Barre Project), created specifically for Dance Theatre of Harlem and set to the electro-soul music of British composer James Blake. This will be a Relaxed Matinee: During a Relaxed Matinee, house lights will remain at a glow, sound levels will be lowered, and the audience will be warned of any surprises.     The East Phillips Neighborhood Institute (EPNI) will be celebrating the transference of ownership of the historic, and highly contested, Roof Depot building into the community's hands. This is the first step in the redevelopment of the vacant warehouse into an urban aquaculture farm, solar energy producer, small business hub, and community center. This event will be a block party-style event with food, music, and dancing. The event will begin with a ceremony, and a presentation by EPNI and allies who have supported the vision for sustainable development at the Roof Depot site for 10 years.
