Along the way, you’ll learn about how the over-world and the underworld worked together as an economic force in a city that was famously safe for criminals hiding out in the open. Bus Tour: Historic Faribault - February 20th (President's Day) (Southwest)Trips, Tours & Special EventsAlexander Faribault was the son of a French fur trader and a Dakota woman. Discover the history of his namesake city...from it's Native American roots to today. Our day starts with a guided tour of Faribo Woolen Mills with time to shop. Next our local guide will join us on the bus and narrate a historic city tour where we'll learn about the Native Americans who lived here first, see gems such as Shattuck-St.Mary's Prep School (think Hogwarts!), and learn about the Tilt-A-Whirl (yes, it originated here in 1926!). We will enjoy lunch together at the Historic Depot restaurant. Following lunch we'll visit the Rice County Historical Society Museum. You will have an afternoon option to tour the Cathedral of Our Merciful Savior (first Episcopal Church in the US led by Bishop Whipple, known as "Straight Tongue" by the Dakota and Ojibwe) OR 10,000 Drops Distillery tour and tasting ($15 extra paid directly to the distillery). After a stop for our Indigenous foods lunch, we'll travel to the new Hocokata Ti Cultural Center in Shakopee for a guided tour of the exhibit Mdewakanton: Dwellers of Spirit Lake. Our last stop will be a presentation and shopping at local gem, Birchbark Books & Native Arts, operated by a spirited collection of people who believe in the power of good writing, the beauty of handmade art, the strength of Native culture, and the importance of small and intimate bookstores.
