BACKGROUND: The construction of the I-94 highway in Rondo destroyed more than 300 predominantly Black-owned businesses. Today, we recognize that the creation, retention and growth of BIPOC-owned businesses is essential to revitalizing the Selby corridor, creating avenues for community wealth, and reestablishing Rondo as an African American commercial district and cultural destination. A key aspect of our work, Rondo CLT honors local business owners by compensating them financially for their often overlooked and under-resourced contributions. So, as Mychael and Stephanie Wright moved toward retirement after establishing and operating Golden Thyme Coffee & Cafe for nearly 25 years, we worked with them to create an innovative approach to steward their legacy and grow their brand. In 2023, Rondo CLT purchased Golden Thyme to ensure the beloved community cafe could remain a staple in the neighborhood. After briefly using the cafe as an incubator for food-based businesses, Rondo CLT transformed the cafe into a restaurant and bar in 2025, as well as opened a second cafe location down the street. Together, Golden Thyme has brought over 35 jobs to the community.
Golden Thyme is located at 934 Selby Ave, St Paul, MN 55104.
