Learn the ins and outs of Basketball alongside your friends! Through this program, students will discover a love for the game and learn good sportsmanship, teamwork, and loyalty. All skill levels welcome! In order to ensure that our high-quality enrichment classes are accessible to all families, Minneapolis Community Education is now offering fees on a sliding scale. We're moving to a sliding scale model for program fees so our afterschool programs can be financially sustainable and more equitable. The different prices reflect the average cost of offering a class as well as discounted options and options that help us cover our administrative costs. Fees cover instructor pay, class supplies, program materials, marketing and scholarships. Families are asked to pick the price that they are able to pay or select the no-cost option. We have always offered partial and full scholarships upon request. By more clearly articulating our lower cost options, we have removed the barrier that some may have felt in making these requests. When families participate as they are able, in all levels of our sliding scale, the whole program becomes self-sustaining.

Once Upon a Tween Book Club (4-5 Gr.)

A book club for ALL readers (even if they’re not Swifties!) who enjoy books that harmonize with the music of Taylor Swift; books about being fearless, finding your voice, exploring folklore, going back in time, love and friendship, tortured poetry, and maybe even a showgirl or two. Together we’ll choose one book to listen to in class and one book to read at home; and we’ll explore those books with journaling, book circles, and bookish crafts and projects. We’ll also share the books we’re reading independently, choose theme songs to go with them, and discuss Taylor’s songs as actual stories with characters and plot lines – just like a book! As part of the class, each participant will receive a book journal, a special journaling pen, and one book that we’ll be reading together as a class. Titans of Technology ALC (LHU) (3-5 Gr.)

All students will be offered a snack regardless of whether they pay or not. (T/Th Session Only) Titans of Technology (formerly Literacy Legends) is a project-based course designed to integrate literacy and technology while promoting student collaboration. Students will work independently, with a partner, and in small collaborative groups of four to five students. Students will engage with technology in various forms: (podcasting, Computer Animated Design (CAD) for 3D modeling, exploration with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), Google Suite applications, Flip video creation, coding, etc.). Students will utilize technology to complete various projects that promote literacy in action. Example One: students will develop video presentations for the Lake Harriet Lower Campus outdoor learning space (OLS). These videos would be mini research projects describing elements within the OLS: sunflowers (why so tall?), tomatoes (fruit or vegetable?), Maple trees (history of making syrup). As students or other visitors walk the paths of the OLS, they can activate the videos from any device via the displayed QR code. Example Two: With Cospaces (a 3D modeling platform for computer animated design - CAD) students can research then build their own VR/AR experiences to share with others: a 3D infographic on a topic of interest; virtual exhibits; interactive storyboards. Example Three: Students can work in small groups to develop our school newspaper and/or podcast series to be shared with the entire Lake Harriet Upper community.
