  • ALC: GEMS & GISE Lego Robotics (1-3) Mondays & Wednesdays

    Where creativity meets technology! In this innovative program, your child will design, build, and program their own Lego robots, learning the basics of engineering and coding. It’s a thrilling introduction to STEM that will spark curiosity and inspire future inventors. Minneapolis Public Schools would like to invite your child to participate in Afterschool Programming at Marcy Elementary School. Programming this year will focus on GEMS and GISE Lego Robotics Stem Academy (specific topic below). Space is limited so register as soon as possible for priority consideration! Fall/Winter 2025- Robotics - In this exciting robotics class students learn mechanical design, construction, programming, and teamwork skills. In pairs, using LEGO building elements, motors, and sensors, students build different robot prototypes and program them with a computer to move, react, and make sounds. Students will utilize their prototypes and programming to solve design challenges using the LEGO We Do 2.0, EV3 or the Lego Spike Prime Robotic Systems. District Robotics Exhibition on Marcy's Academic Night. Spring 2026 - Robotics (theme TBD) - In these engaging and investigative classes students are immersed in the fundamentals of energy, electricity, and electronics. Students explore energy sources, examine energy basics (energy measured, converted, and transferred) and the future of energy including conservation and alternatives through an interactive problem based approach. Students conduct hands-on investigations into the properties of electricity – currents, open and closed circuits, series and parallel circuits, and static electricity. Students work and learn through exciting, project-based electronics experiments utilizing circuit boards and electronic components for circuit construction, testing, and troubleshooting.     Black Affinity Group (3-5) Wednesday

    This course is designed for African-descended students in 3rd grade through 5th grade in a multicultural environment, as part of the Black Affinity Group. Through 10 interactive sessions, students will explore the history of civil rights in the United States, with a special focus on the fight for social justice led by African-American figures. Students will engage in dynamic activities such as role-plays, poster creation, games, music, and discussions that foster understanding of equity, rights, and the power of community leadership. The course will culminate with a school assembly in honor of Black History Month, where students will present what they have learned through songs, poems, and creative projects that celebrate the accomplishments and struggles of African-American leaders for justice and civil rights.     Students will develop hands on outdoor explorations skills such as hammocking, birding with binoculars, animal and plant knowledge. They will go on field trips every Wednesday to local nature places, such as community gardens, Minneapolis lakes, the Mississippi River & more. Must attend BOTH days
  • Campfire MN (3-5) Monday & Wednesday

    Students will explore their interests and grow their comfort in the outdoors while going on field trips to local nature spaces in Minneapolis. They'll develop skills like hiking, birding with binoculars, fishing, animal and plant I.D., ice skating, etc. They'll visit Minneapolis lakes, the Mississippi River, community gardens and more! Camp Fire naturalists and Community Education staff will chaperone students, and Campfire staff will occasionally transport students in a 15-passenger van.     Choir with Jared (K-5) Tuesday

    Students will learn arrangements of contemporary pop songs and perform them at the end of the after school programming cycle. Special emphasis will be placed on breath control, pitch, collaborative singing and performance etiquette on a stage. We’re going to have so much fun!     Dungeons & Dragons (3-5) Monday

    Pick up your sword, prepare your spells, and join us for an adventure for honor, hijinks, and hilarity! Students create and roleplay a character or become the Dungeon Master (DM) as they travel through a mystical world, fight monsters, and find treasure together. Come one, come all, no matter if you're an experienced or new player, and be part of an unforgettable adventure!     Gardening Basics (1-3) Tuesday

    This class will introduce students to the fundamentals of growing plants by teaching them how to plant seeds, water and care for small plants. Learn about different types of vegetables and flowers and learn the life cycle of a plant. Fostering a love for nature and hands-on learning in the outdoors.   • Girls, Inc YWCA (4-5) Wednesday

    Girls Inc. is for youth who identify as "girl" or "gender-expansion" who are interested in a "pro-girl" environment. Girls, Inc has girls creating change in their community and learning from women leaders. Students learn how to save, share and spend money, explore what it means to have a safe body and mind, do fun science experiments like making slime and bath bombs, free snacks and earn a t-shirt. Girls, Inc ends with a party that is planned by you!     Join us in the fun club that celebrates students' unique interests and skills while empowering each member to be a leader, and everyday super hero making a difference in their homes and school community just by being themselves. Each class focuses on a specific way to be a leader with related activities centered around a specific leadership theme.     Musical theater comes to life through a series of engaging scenes. This is a highly supportive environment for youngsters to develop their courage to act, sing and dance. The level of challenge fits the needs of the group so that this introduction to musical theater is a positive experience for all. An excellent choice to build self-confidence, discover talent, and learn if your child would enjoy musical theater. Each class will include acting, improvisational games, creative movement, singing and scanned rehearsals with costumes and props. The last class will have a presentation of their mini-show with scenes and songs on the last day of their class in the studio. This does not have a stage performance. Perfect for those wanting to get a sampling of musical theater but might be intimidated by being on stage in front of a large audience.     Reading with Ms. Branagan (Grades K-2))

    Hey kids! Are you ready for a little after school razzle-dazzle with Ms. Branagan? Join Reading with Ms. Branagan where you’ll dive into the world of reading with an engaging online platform and games that makes learning fun and interactive. Each class starts with a cool mindfulness exercise to help you relax, center, and prepare for focused learning. We will explore reading at your level and you'll get to share your favorite stories and characters with the group. It's a great way to improve your reading skills and have a blast at the same time. We will create a place where all can thrive academically and emotionally, while having fun!
