In this Capoeira class, students will embark on an exciting journey through the rich history, culture, and physical practice of Afro-Brazilian Capoeira. Throughout the 12-week program, students will learn the fundamentals of Capoeira, starting with the ginga, which is the foundational movement that gives Capoeira its fluid, rhythmic quality. Students will also be introduced to basic kicks and defenses, developing their agility, coordination, and balance while learning essential movements for both attack and defense.
In addition to the physical aspect, students will explore the history of Capoeira and the lineage of the Afro-Brasilian Capoeira Association, gaining insight into its cultural significance and the resilience of Afro-Brazilian traditions. They will also learn about the rules and etiquette of Capoeira, which emphasize respect and community.
Musicality is a crucial component of Capoeira, so students will engage with traditional Capoeira music, learning how to play instruments such as the berimbau and pandeiro, as well as how to sing and clap to accompany the movements. This fosters rhythm, teamwork, and a deeper connection to the art form.
Beyond the technical skills, students will build strength, flexibility, and stamina in a fun and invigorating way, working within a supportive community atmosphere. The program will culminate in a Capoeira Demonstration where students can showcase what they have learned, combining movement, music, and energy in an exciting display of their progress.
This class offers students the opportunity to challenge themselves physically, mentally, and culturally, all while having fun and building confidence.
