On December 3, 1894 William Erhardt was walking home on Old Excelsior Blvd when he came across about of a young woman lying in the street. The woman would be identified as Catherine Ging, a local dressmaker. Erhardt's call for help would lead to an intense investigation uncovering a conspiracy by Harry Haywood to have Catherine Ging killed for insurance money. The trial that would follow made national headlines and was covered by newspapers throughout the country.
Harry Haywood would be Minnesota's first known sociopathic serial killer. The issue of mental illness would be front and center after the verdict and prior to Hayward's death sentence.
