Ramsay County Historical Society produced a video called University Avenue: One Street, a thousand dreams. This tour will explore University Avenue from its beginning near Railroad Island in St. Paul to its Minneapolis terminus in Northeast Minneapolis. University Avenue has always been eclectic, unruly, noisy and gritty. It’s fortunes have changed over the years many times , it’s main purpose has stayed the same, a vital link between Minneapolis and St. Paul. This 133 year old street has gone from dirt to paved, horsedrawn carriages to steam powered rail to the modern street car. We will visit famous churches, industrial sites, businesses, theaters and shops along the way. Many of the ethnic groups that have settled near University Avenue and on it with their businesses will also be visited. In St. Paul, we will learn about Kittsondale,Town House, Milky Way, candy bar, Iris Park, Minnesota Transfer Railway just to name a few spots. In Minneapolis, we will visit historical locations at the University of Minnesota, first computers location, CanCan Wonderland, Territorial Road, famous bakeries, Prospect Park water tower, Frank Lloyd Wright home and many locations and oddities as University Avenue travels through Northeast Minneapolis. Ages 18+.
