  • Arts & Crafts (Grades K-3)

    Does your student love to make arts and crafts, be hands on, and connect with others? In this class we will make many different types of arts and crafts projects based on different seasons and fun themes! Students will be able to take their art projects home or they can give it to a friend! Each project will be an opportunity for your student to experience a hands-on creative space with their peers! Community Education uses a sliding scale model for program fees so our afterschool programs can be financially sustainable and more equitable. Families are asked to pick the price that they are able to pay. By more clearly articulating our lower cost options, we have removed the barrier that some may have felt in making scholarship requests. When families participate at the higher price levels, they help make the program more sustainable. Extended Learning (ALC) classes are free.

    Dungeons & Dragons (3-6)

    Pick up your sword, prepare your spells, and join us for an adventure for honor, hijinks, and hilarity! Students create and roleplay a character or become the Dungeon Master (DM) as they travel through a mystical world, fight monsters, and find treasure together. Come one, come all, no matter if you're an experienced or new player, and be part of an unforgettable adventure! Community Education uses a sliding scale fee model for all classes. Each class has a set Class Cost that we encourage all families to pay. This is the cost of running the class. Lower fees are for families who qualify for free and reduced lunch. If choosing the lower option, you are acknowledging your family is on Free/Reduced lunch or finances have substantially changed. The higher options cover scholarships for students to participate in after school classes.
  • GEMS/GISE E2 (4th, 5th, 6th grades) - Monday and Wednesday, teacher: Joseph Capps

    GEMS is Girls in Engineering, Mathematics, and Science. GISE is Guys in Science and Engineering. This year long Project Based Learning program for students in grades 4, 5 and 6 provides positive early experiences in science, technology, engineering and math. Students work through the Engineering Design Process, share their work, and document their learning. Spring 2025 focus STEM OF SPEED theme. Students build and test model cars, exploring the scientific concepts of speed and aerodynamics of land vehicles.

  • Girls on the Run (Grades 3-5)

    Seward is exploring creating a Girls on the Run Minnesota team for Spring 2025. Girls on the Run is a program that inspires participants to recognize their inner strength, increase their level of physical activity, imagine their possibilities, and confidently stand up for themselves and others. Primarily a confidence building program with some running at your happy pace thrown in too. Running supports the curriculum but this is not a program whose focus is teaching kids how to run. It teaches kids how to show up for themselves and their community. At the end of the program near May there will be a 5K run for all participants.     Gym Games (K-6)

    Join Spring after school in the gym for a 12 week club where you get to move! Shake, shuffle, and slide off the school day as students engage in weekly exercises and gym games between 4 and 5:30 that invigorate your student to increase focus and a body calm for time at home! For students grades K-5. In order to ensure that our high-quality enrichment classes are accessible to all families, Minneapolis Community Education is now offering fees on a sliding scale. We're moving to a sliding scale model for program fees so our youth programs can be financially sustainable and more equitable. The different prices reflect the average cost of offering a class as well as discounted options and options that help us cover our administrative costs. Fees cover instructor pay, class supplies, program materials, marketing and scholarships. Families are asked to pick the price that they are able to pay. As always, we will continue to offer full scholarships upon request. When families participate as they are able, in all levels of our sliding scale, the whole program becomes self-sustaining.     Seward Seed Sowers (1-3)

    Join Jackie, our Outdoor Learning Coordinator, starting seeds indoors and developing early interest in gardening and planting. Start your own plants in our indoor plant lab. Club meets weekly to watch growth and talk/learn about all things gardening and planting.     Snapology: Pokemania Class K-3rd (Seward)

    Come join Snapology for Pokemania. Students will build and explore the world of Pokemon as they create their own gyms, battles, and even their very own generation of Pokemon. Children will also learn about real world science as they learn about the habitats of the Pokemon. Your child will have a blast becoming the best Pokemon trainer ever.
  • Tabletop Roleplaying Club (4th, 5th, 6th grades) - Monday and Wednesday, teacher: Tom Ward

    Attention 4th-6th grade students! The realm is in danger and brave adventurers are needed to save the day! Students will work collaboratively to tell and develop a story. Students use critical thinking and reasoning, creativity, flexible thinking, communication and problem solving, teamwork skills, and fundamental math skills. Students to create artwork, develop characters, and practice storytelling skills.

    Twin Cities Chess Club (K-6)

    Introducing our exciting chess class for youth, brought to you by Community Ed and Twin Cities Chess Club! Join us in a fun and engaging environment where young minds can unleash their strategic thinking and sharpen their problem-solving skills. Our chess class is designed to cater to all skill levels, from beginners to intermediate players. Participants will have the opportunity to learn from each other, play friendly matches, and participate in tournaments to put their skills to the test. Our focus extends beyond the game itself, fostering critical thinking, patience, decision-making, and the ability to analyze complex situations. Whether your child is interested in casual play or aspires to compete at a higher level, our chess class offers a supportive and nurturing environment to develop their abilities.     Urban dance class is a high-energy class that focuses on learning the rhythms and movements of street dance styles like popping, locking, and breaking set to hip hop music, while encouraging individual style.
