    Beginner Guitar (LHU) (4-5 Gr.)

Alongside Mr. Benson, students will learn all there is to know about guitar. From the simplest of chords to the greatest of songs, they will hone their guitar skills across 8 exciting nights. No experience required. To ensure that our high-quality enrichment classes are accessible to all families, Minneapolis Community Education is now offering fees on a sliding scale. We're moving to a sliding scale model for program fees so our afterschool programs can be financially sustainable and more equitable. Families are asked to pick the price that they are able to pay or select the no-cost option. We have always offered partial and full scholarships upon request. If you choose to pay above the class cost, you are helping provide opportunities for children in your community that would otherwise be unable to afford them. By more clearly articulating our lower cost options, we have removed the barrier that some may have felt in making these requests. When families participate as they are able, in all levels of our sliding scale, the whole program becomes self-sustaining.

Creative Journaling Inspired by Taylor Swift (LHU) (4-5 Gr.)

Taylor Swift’s lyrics reveal a gift for documenting and processing her experiences; and where did those experiences go first? Her journal! By listening to her songs and playing with her lyrics, we can create excitement around the practice of journaling for fun, self-care, and creative expression. When it’s time to put pen to paper, we’ll look to the diary entries of a superfan in the novel Worldwide Crush – how is she using her journal? What techniques is she using to express herself authentically? Students will experiment with the different styles of journaling to see which one works best for them; documentary, stream of consciousness, manifesting, acrostic poems and more. Journals will be provided, but students can also bring their own. Titans of Technology ALC (LHU) (3-5 Gr.)

Titans of Technology (formerly Literacy Legends) is a project-based course designed to integrate literacy and technology while promoting student collaboration. Students will work independently, with a partner, and in small collaborative groups of four to five students. Students will engage with technology in various forms: (podcasting, Computer Animated Design (CAD) for 3D modeling, exploration with virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR), Google Suite applications, Flip video creation, coding, etc.). Students will utilize technology to complete various projects that promote literacy in action. Example One: students will develop video presentations for the Lake Harriet Lower Campus outdoor learning space (OLS). These videos would be mini research projects describing elements within the OLS: sunflowers (why so tall?), tomatoes (fruit or vegetable?), Maple trees (history of making syrup). As students or other visitors walk the paths of the OLS, they can activate the videos from any device via the displayed QR code. Example Two: With Cospaces (a 3D modeling platform for computer animated design - CAD) students can research then build their own VR/AR experiences to share with others: a 3D infographic on a topic of interest; virtual exhibits; interactive storyboards. Example Three: Students can work in small groups to develop our school newspaper and/or podcast series to be shared with the entire Lake Harriet Upper community.
