Fees cover production royalties, tech costs, staffing, marketing and scholarships. Families are asked to pick the price that they are able to pay or select the no-cost option. When families participate as they are able, in all levels of our sliding scale, the whole program becomes self-sustaining.

  • Architect Avenue Walking Tour (Summer)

    The beautiful old houses on Architect Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis began with a contest in 1905 between the most talented architects of the Midwest. The challenge was to design a cottage that could be built for $1,500 that would combine elegance, utility and affordability. The contest culminated in a grand celebration and the cottages were planned to be auctioned off to the highest bidder. Today, all six homes still exist on this nearly forgotten quiet corner of Hennepin County. Join urban historian Kathy Kullberg to learn about the six architects, their house designs, the last days and the final outcome of the competition. We will meet at Architect Avenue which you can enter at Central Avenue NE and Columbia Parkway.

Glueks and Heinrichs who made their homes here on these very streets. There are nine sites associated with these famous families of Minneapolis brew history. Local historian Kathy Kullberg will share their stories -- some funny, some tragic. Join us for a fun-filled day touring the Minneapolis Fire Department's Training Tower, Rosenbauer Motors, Inc.- the world’s largest manufacturer of custom fire trucks and a guided tour of the Hinkley Fire Museum. At the Minneapolis Fire Department’s training tower, you’ll get an up close look at where new recruits go through their academy training and where veteran firefighters hone their skills too. From EMS, high-angle, confined-space, roof and arial operations, see how firefighters train using real props to prepare for any type of emergency. You’ll also get a look at specific rigs and equipment not kept at fire houses. At Rosenbauer, learn how an order for a new fire apparatus is taken, the design and model process, and manufacturing. Did you know it can often take 2 years or more for a new fire engine and they cost upwards of a million dollars? Also, learn about how Rosenbauer is a leader in developing and producing electric fire trucks that Minnesota Departments are beginning to use. Creating firetrucks for all over the world, this gem of a factory is on our own backyard and you’ll get to see fire trucks in all stages from bare aluminum all the way to completed units. We will visit Amish and Norwegian rural areas and have an opportunity to buy goods from local farmers at a local farm products auction. One of the highlights will be touring Norskadlen a Norwegian cultural site, dedicated to preserving Norwegian history in the heart of the Driftless Area of Wisconsin. On this 40 acre site, we will explore Norwegian buildings and enjoy a special Norwegian dinner. We also will learn about this special part of rural America that is the center of organic farming.     Rustic Backroads of Wisconsin and Tiffany Bottoms Natural Birding Trip Travel along rustic rural roads of Wisconsin on our way to Tiffany Bottoms State Natural Area along the Chippewa River bottomlands. Our route will take us to Wisconsin cities along historic US Highway 12 through Woodville, Hersey, Wilson, Knapp, and with a short city tour of Menomonee, Wisconsin. The final stretch of our trip will travel through Downsville to Durand, Wisconsin, where we will board our open car train for a three-and-a-half-hour ride through one of the best birding areas in America. Along this route, we will learn the history and see historic sites in each of the little towns we travel through. Tiffany Bottoms State Natural Area is a small portion of the most extensive river delta of the Midwest. The bottoms abound in wildlife besides the typical species; the area contains rare and uncommon birds. The train travels through a birders' paradise where you’ll find nearly every species of bird that lives in the Upper Midwest. The open air train tram takes passengers into the most remote areas of this wildlife area.     Come canoeing at Fort Snelling State Park with DNR Naturalist Kao Thao. Equipment provided. Place: Fort Snelling State Park, Swimming beach (where the canoes are) Drive to (meeting location): Swimming Beach - once past the Park’s Front office (Contact Station). Address: 101 Snelling Lake Road, St. Paul MN 55111. **The entrance to Fort Snelling State Park is on highway 5 and Post Road (Adjacent to the MSP International Airport). DO NOT go to the Historic Fort Snelling (Bloomington Road). Keep in mind that it will take at least 10-15 minutes to drive from the park’s entrance building (Contact Station) to the Visitor Center.   • Cedar-Riverside Walking Tour (Southwest)

    No other neighborhood in Minneapolis has impacted our city’s music and theater life, diverse demographics, higher education opportunities, and unique skyline as has the Cedar Riverside neighborhood. As we walk through the blocks centered on Cedar and Riverside Avenues, we’ll learn about the liquor patrol zone, immigrant homes, West Bank bars, the food co-op movement, Dania Hall, protests and rent strikes, mosques, markets, a settlement house and those colorful high rise buildings next to 35W. Bring your own stories to share with tour leader Maureen Trepp, lifetime Mpls. resident, historian and frequent Cedar Riverside visitor. Meet at the outdoor entry to the Humphrey Institute on 19th Ave. So. and 3rd St. E. at 10:00 a.m.. The tour lasts 1 ½ hours and is about a mile in length. There are 2 Blue line and 1 Green line light rail stops in the neighborhood and a parking ramp on 19th Ave. along with street parking. If tour is full, please enroll for the waitlist.     Join us on the river with Colleen O'Connor Toberman, Land Use & Planning Program Director for Friends of the Mississippi. On this boat cruise, you'll enjoy autumn views of the Mississippi River's only gorge while learning about how we engineered the locks and dams to tame the river for industry. Is it time to change our vision for the future? Studies are underway right now to consider changing or removing the dams. This tour will cover the history, current state, and complex future possibilities for our metro Mississippi. River conditions permitting, our boat will travel up and down through Lock and Dam 1. Meet at the Watergate Marina, 2500 Crosby Farm Road, Saint Paul Minnesota, 55116. Crosby Farm Road is at the intersection of Shepherd Road and Gannon Road. Transportation to the Watergate Marina is on your own. Beverages will be available to purchase on board the boat. You may bring your own food. Ages 21+.   • Downtown Minneapolis Walking Tour w/ Mark Raderstorf (Southwest)

    Come join Lynhurst resident and tour guide Mark Raderstorf on an informative and entertaining walking tour of downtown Minneapolis. We will get to see the inside of iconic buildings such at the City Hall, Grain Exchange, Hennepin County Govt Center, Farmer's and Merchants Bank, IDS Tower and Wells Fargo Tower. As we walk the streets of downtown, you will learn why St Anthony Falls (Owamni) was the birthplace of Minneapolis and the importance that water power played in the immense economic growth of our city, post 1860. You will get a deeper appreciation of Minneapolis History and the role these buildings played in the development of downtown. Tour distance will be 2 miles so bring your walking shoes.     Dr. Artika Tyner will address the nation’s current reading crisis and host a book drive to collect culturally diverse books to support the work of a literacy non -profit, Planting People Growing Justice Leadership Institute. Join Dr. Tyner from 10 am-Noon on Sat. Sept 6th for her monthly "Readers are Leaders" event at the Hallie Q. Brown Community Center. Option to bring a culturally-diverse children's book.
